Annie Riordan MLGP
Chief Executive Officer
Shire of Harvey
Please outline your experience and involvement with LG Professionals WA and the WA Local Government Sector.
Since first joining the LG Professionals Board in 2015, it's been a privilege to represent you and contribute to the work of the Association. I'm nominating again to keep building on that work, continuing to deliver value for members, and bringing my board experience and learnings to the role.
During my time on the LG Professionals board, I have represented the Association as past President and Vice President and have undertaken roles on various committees and networks, currently the Finance Committee and State Conference Committee and the Executive Assistants Network. I have for many years also been involved in my local South West Branch of LG Professionals and have previously held roles as President and Vice President.
With fifteen years in local government in WA - currently as CEO at the Shire of Harvey and previously as Director Corporate and Community Services at the Shire of Augusta Margaret River - along with executive roles in Queensland and South Australia, I bring broad sector experience and a strong focus on engagement, collaboration, and professional development.
Please outline your reasons in nominating to be a Board Member of LG Professionals WA.
I have been fortunate to work in local government where we play such an important role in the community, and to build a career doing something that I believe in. LG Professionals has during my time of employment supported me in the provision of professional development, networking events, communicationa and representing sector interests. It has been a valuable experience working with fellow board members over the last ten years and I appreciate their dedication to supporting the Association and its members.
During this period the focus hasn't changed, which is members first in decisions that are made by the Board whether it is through representation and advocacy, professional development and networking opportunities or our membership structures and offerings.
As we enter into a new ear, having farewelled our long serving and high achieving CEO, Candy Choo, we look forward to welcoming our new CEO, Stacey Hutt. This is an exciting period of change for the Association, and I very much wish to be part of this new team.
Please outline your skills and qualities that would help to enhance the Association as a Board Member.
I hold a Bachelor of Business (Accountancy), a Graduate Certificate in Corporate Governance, a Master of Business Administration and am a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA). I love to learn, and have been fortunate in the organisations that I have worked in to be supported in my professional development. Skills and knowledge enhance career progression and I wish to continue to work for those in local government to have the same opportunities that have been afforded to me.
I have also been fortunate to complete the Australian Institute of Company Directors' course which has built on my skills as a board member. As with you all that work in local government and understand the role of Council, I am very aware of the strategic focus of the board's role and the active support of management.
In addition to the qualifications, I remain a committed local government professional by nature and passionate about the sector, the impact that it has on the local community and the opportunities for staff to develop their careers.
Please outline your priorities if successfully elected as a Board Member of LG Professionals WA.
Key areas of focus for the coming term are:
- Representation - Ensuring the Association remains as a trusted and sough after voice for local government. It is essential that the strong relationships that have been established with the State Government and industry partners are nurtured and that our voice continues to be heard.
- Professional Development and Networking Opportunities - The range of training and events and new networks delivered by LG Professionals provides opportunities for members to enhance their professional development. Continuing to ensure that staff in regional areas have the same access and opportunities is an important focus for me. I will continue to push for hybrid training options but also the opportunity to get out into the regions for face to face delivery where we know that some of the best connections happen.
- Sustainability of the Association - Key decisions made by the Board over the last few years have enabled the Association to enhance training and revenue opportunities while providing additional benefits to members. Continuing to investigate opportunities for revenue and service diversification will keep a focus on sustainability of the Association.
