Jean Knight MLGP
Chief Executive Officer
Shire of Dalwallinu
Please outline your experience and involvement with LG Professionals WA and the WA Local Government Sector.
I have been a member of LGPro formally LGMA since 2005. For many years I was the Secretary/Treasurer for the Avon Branch of LGPro and more recently have taken on the role of Committee Member/Treasurer for the newly formed Avon Midlands Branch. This new amalgamation hopes to reinvigorate the two former branches and support local government officers in these regions.
I commenced my local government career as Deputy Chief Executive Officer at the Shire of Morawa in 2000. Since then I have held management roles in the Shires of Toodyay and Chittering. In 2016 I landed my first CEO role at the Shire of Dalwallinu and that is where I remain until at least April 2029.
Please outline your reasons in nominating to be a Board Member of LG Professionals WA.
I am very passionate about local government and love coming to work (most days).
Local Government, as the other levels of Government say, is the closest to the community and I take pride in ensuring that local governments remain open and accountable to their communities.
I take great pride in the support that I provide to my staff. I believe in fostering potential and investing in their career paths in local government. LGPro is very effective in this regard with their training, mentoring and support services for officers. I would be supportive for this to continue.
I am committed to contributing to the strategic direction, governance and long term success of LGPro.
Please outline your skills and qualities that would help to enhance the Association as a Board Member.
Relevant Experience - I bring 25 years of experience in the local government industry, with a strong background in finance, governance and strategic planning. This equips me to actively participate in board discussion. As the majority of my career has been in rural locations, I have an understanding of the challenges that rural and remote local governments face.
Commitment to Good Governance - I understand the responsibilities of board membership and am committed to upholding high standards of transparency, accountability and integrity. Collaborative and Constructive Approach - I value collaboration and respectful dialogue. I work well in team environments. I believe in contributing positively to board dynamics and culture.
Dedication to LGPro's Mission - I share a strong alignment to the vision and values of the organisation. I want to contribute to the continued success of LGPro.
Please outline your priorities if successfully elected as a Board Member of LG Professionals WA.
1. I will support the board with developing clear, forward thinking strategic plans that align with LGPro's mission.
2. I would like to advocate for local government to be a clear path for school leavers. Where are our next leaders coming from? Local government is not at the forefront of school leavers minds and they are unaware of the broad career opportunities within local government.
3. Continue to support the established relationships with WALGA and the State Government to ensure that we as an industry are consulted about any further changes to the many Acts and Regulations that we are governed by.
