Effective management of challenging conflict situations



Conflict causes significant disruptions and reportedly unprecedented levels of stress in the workplace.

Participants attending this workshop will develop an understanding of the processes of conflict coaching and mediation in order to increase their skill and confidence in assisting others to manage themselves in conflict constructively.
 
The nature of conflict (signs; threats and opportunities; indications of escalation) will be explored in relation to a case study developed specifically for local government. Participants will also have the opportunity to reflect on some of their own challenges around conflicts, covering their personal conflict preferences and self-management strengths, along with an analysis of key elements of the situation.

Key topics that ill be discussed throughout the workshop include:

  • Preventing destructive conflict.
  • Conflict versus disagreement.
  • Controlling your own behaviour and self-management: ensuring that you don't escalate conflict.
  • Applying effective conflict management principles to difficult situations.
  • Assisting others to manage their conflict.
  • Support Services

Attendees will also participate in a facilitated discussion to explore techniques and tips around:

  • Developing self-awareness and ensuring others don't press your buttons
  • Authentic leadership during difficult times
  • Identifying triggers for yourself and other parties in conflict
  • Recognising early warning signs of conflict and stages of escalation
  • The conflict resolution continuum - alternative conflict management approaches
  • Managing yourself in the moment when under fire and maintaining self-care when the heat is on
  • Identifying and maintaining your support cast
  • Managing business resolution when relationships are strained

The workshop will conclude with the identification of common action items for follow up, along with individual reflection on how best to apply and consolidate workshop learnings.
