Lighthouse Project (2.0) - Time to move the needle!

A focus on action to increase the employment of people with disability in WA Local Government

These free training workshops will have a strong  focus on action to increase the employment of people with disability in WA local government. There will be new content, so these workshops will be suitable for previous as well as new participants.

The workshops will be followed by the Lighthouse 2019 Grant Program. Attendance at the workshops will be helpful for prospective grant applicants.

Local government is one of the biggest employers in most communities in Western Australia. Most have a stated intention to reflect their communities in their workforce. This makes their organisations both stronger and fairer.

However the percentage of people with disability employed in WA local government is barely moving. Applying the State Government's very modest target of 2.3% means the employment of 600 more people with disability in local government. We now know a lot about what is getting in the way of that result. These workshops have been redesigned to support local governments to go beyond good intentions and move the needle.

The workshops will be highly engaging, with opportunities for sharing and peer learning. They will cover:

  • Introduction/refresher on the purpose and requirements of Outcome 7 of Disability Access and Inclusion Plans (DAIP)
  • Frameworks for disability friendly and disability confident workplaces
  • What research and experience (including participants' experiences) tells us about the opportunities and barriers
  • Moving the needle - targets and strategies to overcome historic discrimination
  • Levelling up - leadership and influence in the local business community
  • Skills for change agency - a session on how to lead change from any position by Luke van der Beeke from Marketing for Change (behaviour change specialist)
  • An update on the impact of the NDIS on employment services
  • A session with local providers of employment supports and Disability Employment Service Providers to present their services (where possible)
  • An information session on the Lighthouse Grants Program 2019

It is highly recommended that each Local Government send at least one senior staff member (preferably those in general management, HR, Community Development or similar roles) to attend a workshop. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Disability Reference Group (DRG) - Expressions of Interest

We are seeing Expressions on Interest from people with a disability who are currently working in local government in WA to join the Lighthouse Project Disability Reference Group (DRG).

The Lighthouse Project is seeking to hear and amplify the voices of people with disability who have experience of employment in local government - what works, what doesn't, key messages and priorities for positive change. In addition to the benefits for the project and sector from your participation, we are committed to providing an enjoyable, high quality professional development and collegial experience.
